The Hooded Vulture, Mount Kenya - a photo on Flickriver

I am partial towards large mammals, that bit is very clear in my photographs and descriptions. But I would be a fool if I didn’t admit that I saw some spectacular birds of my trip as well. This one is called a Hooded Vulture and this pretty little thing is endangered. Now I never thought I would associate the word pretty with a vulture but just look at her! This was shot at the Mount Kenya Country Club; a little haven full of interesting wildlife and totally luxurious digs. This lady was merrily walking around near the little lake in the late afternoon when I spotted her from a distance. She immediately caught my eye as she looked like a vulture but was so much smaller than the ones we saw in the savannah. I realised later that hooded vultures are in fact smaller than their aforementioned cousins. I had to creep up very close to her, with the softest possible feet and the most docile manner. Finally I was close enough to shoot her and she even tried to walk towards me for a close up! What an adorable little thing!
