The Old Telephone Box - a photo on Flickriver

            This is the iconic Jubilee K6 red public payphone box in Curbar, a village and civil parish in the Peak District National Park, England. The telephone box was made in 1937 shortly after the accession of King George VI and was adopted by the Parish Council for a nominal fee of £1 when British Telecom decided in 2010 to disconnect unprofitable rural telephone boxes. A team of villagers has contributed to its restoration and conversion to a village information point.

Photographing the inside of the telephone box was quite a challenge. I wanted to capture the entire 360˚ view to create a high resolution spherical panorama - this absolutely requires a tripod. In addition to the problem of how to fit myself and the tripod inside this tiny space, I also had to contend with a subject that was barely 300mm away from the end of the lens, with a background that I wanted to remain in focus. Plus, on a bright sunny day, the contrast between the sky and the inside of the box was huge.

I managed to fit the tripod inside the box and set up the panoramic head and camera in a position that was at the centre of the box. The Canon fisheye lens captures a huge area, but it still requires six frames around the horizontal to get the full 360˚. For each frame I positioned the head, closed the phone box door, and remote-triggered the shutter with 3 bracketed shots to cover the wide dynamic range. Then one more shot with the camera pointing straight up to get the zenith.

To capture the floor without the tripod was the final task. First, I ensured that the previous shots had included the bottom of all of the phone box's four sides. This meant I only needed to capture the floor itself in the final shot (this is important when it comes to stitching the images together, because anything projecting above the floor level in this shot will not stitch accurately). I moved the tripod just outside the doorway, with the door held open, and reset the spherical pano head for the nadir shot. I use a head that has a special feature just for this - it allows the camera to be swung out and away from the central axis of the tripod, with the lens pointing straight down. I was able to get the camera positioned some way inside the box, at roughly the same height as the previous shots, with all of the tripod feet outside the box.
