Die Johannissteine (Naturdenkmal) - a photo on Flickriver

            Die Johannissteine sind 300 Millionen Jahre alt, eine natürlich gewachsene Felsgruppe aus konglomeratischem Sandstein. Sie haben die Fantasie vieler Menschen angeregt. Fußspuren von Johannes dem Täufer seien darin zu sehen. Kleine Löcher wurden als altgermanische Sternwarte interpretiert, gar als Zentrum der Welt. Die Lösung: 1926 meißelte jemand Fußspuren hinein sowie acht Löcher, die die Figur des Sternbildes „Großer Wagen“ zeigen – als Werbung für ein Märchenbuch. Die Geschichte lief völlig aus dem Ruder, die Menschen interpretierten alles Mögliche hinein – unter anderem die NSDAP. Die Verursacher trauten sich nicht mehr die Wahrheit zu sagen. Erst in den 1970er Jahren klärte sich die Sache auf.

Weiter oberhalb der Johannissteine finden sich zahlreiche trichterförmige Vertiefungen, die durch Bergbautätigkeiten entstanden, sogenannte Pingen.  Dort steht auch alte Schutzkammer, die Schutz vor umherfliegenden Steinen bei Sprengungen im  Steinbruch bietet.
