steam at Carlisle 032 - a photo on Flickriver

            Mighty Britannia mainline British steam loco at Carlisle station. I had a Britannia in my boyhood train set, she was my favourite, beautiful, elegant machine, wonderful to see the real one, and not static in a museum, but alive, under steam, hissing and roaring, doing what she was built to do. Steam locos aren't like regular modern trains, they feel more like living creatures, they "breathe", you can feel the heat from them as you stand on the platform beside them, smell of steam, oil and smoke, the 'chuffing' noise so characteristic of steam locos increases in intensity as they work harder, just like a human or animal breathing harder as they work. Beautiful piece of machinery, good to see it preserved and still working
