Uno de nuestros más extendidos y habituales pájaros carpinteros, el pico picapinos, es un ave dotada de un poderoso pico, que posee una prodigiosa capacidad para taladrar las maderas más resistentes. Estas cualidades le permiten instalarse en una gran variedad de hábitats forestales o semiforestales, desde pinares de montaña hasta bosques de ribera, amén de encinares o alcornocales. Este pícido, además, da muestras de una gran elasticidad a la hora de alimentarse, ya que consume tanto insectos como
pollos y huevos o todo tipo de frutos.
