A volte la partenza era fissata per le tre del mattino e quando l'alba, con le sue luci da genesi, riscaldava con i primi raggi di sole i nostri corpi intorpiditi dal freddo, avevamo già marciato tre-quattro ore. Erano giornate che si protraevano all'infinito, bisognava concentrare tutte le proprie forze per arrivare alla fine. La notte, l’ora della serenità. Quando ci fermiamo per la sosta notturna i cammelli vengono scaricati dalle pesanti lastre di sale. Ogni carovaniere impastoia i propri cammelli, lega loro le zampe e li dispone in circolo, gettando loro un fascio di paglia. Si controllano le eventuali ferite, che in caso di bisogno vengono curate con della cenere calda. Sul fuoco la grossa pentola ricolma di riso, con dei pezzetti di carne di montone secca, cuoce lentamente. Un buon tè, dolce e forte, ristora delle fatiche della giornata. Quando la cottura del riso è ultimata, nella stessa pentola si mette come condimento del burro fuso di karitè, poi con le nude mani si prende dalla pentola un po’ di quel riso che, trasformato con le dita in un piccolo bolo, viene abilmente infilato in bocca. La stanchezza sopraggiunge inesorabile. I nomadi avvolti nelle loro coperte, noi nei nostri sacchi a pelo, volgiamo lo sguardo verso il cielo per ammirare le miriadi di stelle che ci stanno a guardare, e lentamente veniamo sopraffatti dal sonno.
