BIOD #112 - Yuri Gagarin - Hello Earth - 12 April 1961

Early on the morning of April 12, 1961, Soviet air force pilot Yuri Gagarin launched from Kazakhstan on Vostok-1. He thus became the first person to travel beyond Earth’s atmosphere into the dark silence of space.

A young Soviet army cadet snapped this image of Gagarin shortly after his return from space (about 106 minutes later). Writes Stephen Walker, author of the book Beyond (2021), "Very few of these earliest images were revealed to the Soviet public at the time. They are raw, immediate, messy and much too real; Gagarin’s shock of hair is matted to his sweating forehead; his face is lined with exhaustion." The writing at bottom says: "Hello, Earth!"
