The Kissing Gate - a photo on Flickriver

The Kissing Gate

            This is possibly the most southerly kissing gate in Scotland, it lies right on the border between Scotland and England on the north bank of the River Tweed on the eastern side of Scotland. 

Now kissing gates are not called kissing gates because of couples meeting there for a kiss, rather, they are called kissing gates because of the fact that they are mounted on a swivel that allows them to swing from one side to another "kissing" the edges before returning to a rest position in the centre of the gated area. Kissing gates were introduced to keep livestock from being able to escape from fields and allow farmers and shepherds to reach their animals without always having to open a large gate that would allow for vehicular access or exit. 

I must admit, I am an old romantic, I would just love for kissing gates to be a meeting place for sweethearts to get together out of the sight of prying eyes and a picnic could be had nearby.
