Geai des chênes

            Ce Geai prévoyant fait des réserves et cherche à dissimuler discrètement  la grosse graine qu'il vient de trouver.

Omnivore mais à dominante végétale, le geai affectionne particulièrement les glands des chênes. Grâce à une poche sous son bec, il peut stocker jusqu'à quatre glands avant de les cacher. A l'automne, il se constitue des réserves en dissimulant de la nourriture sous des racines, des mousses, des feuilles, à l'intérieur de souches d'arbre.... Pour mémoriser ses cachettes, il se sert de points de repères et va même jusqu'à en constituer avec de petits cailloux. Il lui arrive pourtant d'oublier certaines caches ou que les repères aient été détruits : il participe ainsi à la dissémination des chênes puisque les glands non mangés germent sur place.
De nombreuses études universitaires et de l'ONF entre autres, quantifient l'avancée et le renouvellement des forêts de chêne grâce au Geai !
