Texas Tough - a photo on Flickriver

Texas Tough

            This was kind of cool…

While visiting with family in Austin Texas last month we decided to grab a picnic table under a shade tree and grab a snack and drinks. It was a beautiful day and as often happens, I had my camera.

While checking out possible rest sites, two stripped lizards were spotted by the Mrs. sunning by one of the tables. As I approached, they quickly scurried into the surrounding grass to escape. Since they split up, I decided to follow the larger, more colorful of the two to see if I could get a shot. They were fast and stayed low in the freshly mowed grass…making my getting a shot much more difficult than I expected. After trailing behind it for some 25 feet or so and not getting a good head/eye shot, I decided to rejoin my party under the trees.

Just as I started to turn and walk away, this one did a very quick 180 and started charging in my direction…so fast that it caught me off guard! I don’t know if I had a tasty bug on my leg or what but within a second or two it was maybe six feet away…popping its head above the grass and looking at me like this. I snapped this shot and exited its company…wondering what the hell is up with these Texas lizards!
