56120_0807_Caverswall - a photo on Flickriver

            Stabled in the yard at Caverswall, Foxfield Railway on the 20th July 2008 is Southern Railway diagram 1579 brake van S56120.

As a diagram 1579 brake van S56120 should have the duckets on the right hand end of the body however at some point in its career it has had them moved to the left hand end of the body in line with the previous version of these vans to diagram 1578.

Vehicle History
S56120 is a 25 ton brake van built by the Southern Railway at Lancing in 1931 to diagram 1579. These 25 ton brake vans were first introduced in 1928 by the Southern Railway and were built on a similar chassis to the previous standard type van but with a smaller centrally mounted body. Due to the more cramped style they were known by staff as ‘pill boxes’. They were built in various batches with last being constructed in 1948 and a number of variations in the design were introduced during the construction period. These modifications ranged from the position of the lookout duckets (left hand or right hand), open or closed axle guards, even or uneven planking arrangements, with or without sandboxes that were either fully or partially sheeted and also vacuum brake fitted or unfitted vehicles. S56120 arrived at the Foxfield Railway in 1994.
