It had taken longer than anticipated to pick apart the shattered arcane weave that was left behind after the strange portal had been opened. Thankfully the Magistrix was not so much worried about time but results, so Taria could go through everything meticulously. However, it was a mess that made little sense. Litayeth could not have done that type of magic on her own if at all. She was not skilled or knowledgeable in portals like Ilsa had been. The more pieces Taria was able to put together, the more she started to believe that even Ilsa could not open such a gate.
The entire potions classroom was empty. Surprisingly only one corner of the building was destroyed but it sucked out every item that was in there. Probably even the dust and cobwebs behind the bookshelves. It was a wonder how any of the windows did not blow out as well, reinforced with magic as they were. Every day going in and looking at the strange black void that should have led to the outside of the building only seemed to bring ominous feelings.
The only companion that Taria had from time to time was Kara who, for some reason, kept coming in to stare at the void and ask if there was anything she could do. Nothing could be thought of to offer in terms of work, though the dragonborn thought perhaps the reason was because so much of Kara’s purpose was to watch over and protect Lita. It would make sense that the guardian assumed Lita would be safe in a classroom within the city. After all, the scholars had worked so hard to make sure every inch of the college and dorms was secure from a blast of rogue magic down to petty theft.
So how did this happen?
From what Taria could remember of the classroom, that corner only held some books and was used for storage. Not that she would know all that was stored there, but it could be that one of the students had a bad reaction with an old potion that should have been disposed of. No, that didn’t make sense. Not leading to this kind of reaction. She could still sense a touch of vortex pulling at the building enough that each day the large bricks that had been frozen in place had moved a good inch from where they were the day before. That meant the door was still somewhat open, at least on this end. Was it a one way door, though? To where?
Another frustrating night of picking at threads of magic that were starting to fade, letting Taria know that it was only a matter of time before the door would fully close… or fully open. She still did not have answers and only had more growing concerns because of it. She had spent just enough time to feel out the veil and know that, at least Lita was not killed. However this made no sense because no type of location spell would work. It should have if she was anywhere within the realm. Could be she was in the 9 hells but the veil would have told her that. The elemental realms perhaps? This long in any one of them she should have perished though.
“Anything?” Taria was so engrossed in the work she was doing she just assumed the voice was Kara and sighed.
“Not yet. I know, the Magistrix will be disappointed  yet another night.” There was silence that followed and a cold brush along Taria’s back that made her turn to look. She was still the only one within the room, no Kara. There was a pause as she looked into the obsidian-like darkness of the door, and felt a slight pulse of magic from it as if it were encouraging her to go through. She knew better.
“I got this from a book…” Taria spun around again looking around the room. This wasn’t Kara’s voice but a young individual. Not Lita… then she gave a nod with the realization of what it was. She’d turn and look around the room before she chose a spot and started a prayer. She pulled her arms across her chest and started to peer through the veil.
The figures were distorted and too blurry, but Taria could guess the tall one was the tiefling. From her position she could not make out what the halfling was doing but as soon as he moved his arms there was a flash where the tiefling was standing. The walls started to crack and one of the bricks was sucked into the void. It just barely crashed into something that sent sparks through the darkness and it caused Taria’s eyes to widen. It seemed like the group of four individuals were just there only a hundred feet or so in the strange doorway. Four? One was clearly dead, she could see that it was the halfling, or at least parts of his body strewn in a swirling pattern. She looked back at the ghostly visage that had caught her attention and realized who it was and what he was doing. He was trying to hold the gate open to either save or help those inside get through. The sparks seemed to freeze in place once the ghost disappeared and Taria started to put together at least part of the puzzle.
“Anything?” Taria spun to look at Kara, who in turn blinked back. “I take that as a no? Did I disrupt something?” The look on the necromancer’s face went from surprise to seeing even more pieces of the puzzle. She had to make sure though, because the answer would be something Qarinah would not like.
“Were you just in here about ten minutes ago asking the same thing?” Kara blinked and looked to the door before shaking her head. “I think this is the first time I’ve entered without an announcement even.” With a flit of her wings, Taria gave a nod.
“It is time I speak to Qarinah. I… cannot fix this. But after our last conversation, I know who can.”
