R947. INVICTA. May, 1963.

            R947.  This is INVICTA, an early 0-4-0 locomotive built by Robert Stephenson & Company in 1829.  The twentieth locomotive to be built by that company, she was preceded by the rather more famous ROCKET.

INVICTA was built for the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway in Kent which, being opened in 1830, was one of the earliest railway lines to be built.  INVICTA was not a great success as she could not cope with the gradients on the line and she was retired as early as 1836.  

After an unsuccessful attempt to sell her, she was stored under cover and eventually given to the Canterbury City Corporation who put her on display out in the open.  Here she remained for many years but she is now under cover once again at the Canterbury Heritage Museum.
