Trainspotting: ICE

            Der ICE 1 ist der erste in Serie gefertigte Hochgeschwindigkeitszug in Deutschland und der erste von inzwischen sechs Typen von Intercity-Express-Triebzügen. Die seit 1991 im Fahrgastbetrieb mit bis zu 280 km/h eingesetzten Triebzüge werden planmäßig aus zwei Triebköpfen (Baureihe 401) und bis zu 14 Mittelwagen der Baureihen 801 bis 804 gebildet. Vereinzelt werden sie mit Triebköpfen des ICE 2 (Baureihe 402) kombiniert.

Die Triebzüge sind bei einer Länge von bis zu 411 Metern und bis zu rund 800 Sitzplätzen die längsten ICE-Einheiten, die bislang gebaut wurden. Im Gegensatz zu den übrigen ICE-Baureihen sind die ICE 1 Vollzüge, sie können im Betrieb nicht in Zugteile geteilt werden.

Von den 60 in den frühen 1990er Jahren in Betrieb gesetzten Zügen wurde eine Einheit beim ICE-Unglück von Eschede im Juni 1998 weitgehend zerstört. Die verbliebenen 59 Einheiten wurden zwischen 2005 und 2008 umgebaut.[5]

Nach dem Eisenbahnunfall im Landrückentunnel wurde Triebzug 111 Nürnberg vorübergehend aufgelöst und die Anzahl der im Einsatz befindlichen Einheiten auf 58 reduziert. 2013 wurde nach Verschrottung von drei Mittelwagen die Einheit 109 Aschaffenburg dauerhaft aufgelöst. Seither stehen insgesamt 58[6] Triebzüge mit je 12 Wagen, neun Reservewagen sowie drei Reservetriebköpfe zur Verfügung.

Eine weitere Modernisierung wurde 2019 begonnen und soll bis 2023 laufen.
