R1747. 92006 on Charwelton Troughs. July, 1964.

            R1747.  British Railways 9F Class 2-10-0 92006 passing over Charwelton Water Troughs on the Great Central Railway's London Extension with a down goods train in July, 1964.    

Water Troughs, known in other parts of the world as Track Pans, used to be laid between the rails so that steam locomotives could replenish the water tanks in their tenders whilst on the move.  This was accomplished by the fireman winding a handle on the front of the tender which lowered a scoop into the water as the train passed over the troughs and the forward momentum forced the water up a pipe and into the tender.  

The use of water troughs thus enabled trains to travel non-stop over longer distances without the necessity of stopping to take on more water.  

The B.R. 9F Class was the last type of steam locomotive to be built by British Railways with the final example emerging from Swindon Locomotive Works in Wiltshire in March, 1960.
