A arara-vermelha-grande é uma ave psittaciforme da família Psittacidae. É conhecida também como arara-verde e arara-vermelha.
Não é considerada como sendo ameaçada embora, tenha desaparecido de lugares onde antes era comum.
Características:
Mede cerca de 90cm. de comprimento e pesa 1,5kg. De coloração vermelha parecida com a araracanga, da qual se diferencia pelo vermelho mais escuro, face decorada por linhas delgadas de penas vermelhas, e especialmente, pelo verde na parte média das asas que continua até a parte de trás, asas com extremos azuis, rabadilha e ponta do rabo azul.
Alimentação
Gosta de se alimentar do fruto do buriti e coquinhos.
Reprodução:
Nidifica em penhascos e outras áreas escarpadas e em ocos de árvores.
Hábitos:
Costuma andar em bando. Habita a copa de florestas altas, florestas de galeria, campos com árvores isoladas, buritizais e coqueirais, até 1400 m. Hábitos semelhantes ao de outras araras.
Distribuição Geográfica:
Amazônia brasileira e em rios costeiros margeados por florestas no leste do País, chegando originalmente até o Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro e interior do Paraná. Encontrada também no Panamá e Colômbia; e desde o norte da Colômbia, planícies venezuelanas, até a Bolivia e norte da Argentina.
