The Golden Hour - a photo on Flickriver

The Golden Hour

            A few years ago, while preparing to host a children’s wildlife photography workshop at O’Bannon Woods State Park, I struggled to find a photograph that would help me to explain The Golden Hour (TGH) and its importance while in the field.  THG is the hour just after sunrise, and just before sunset when the angle of the sun’s rays in more direct, more studio like than any other part of the day. It also lights up areas underneath the natural flora of the area to expose anything taking refuge underneath.

While visiting Custer SP in South Dakota last month, this scene presented itself…two thoughts immediately came to mind:

1.It would be the perfect photo to discuss TGH and the rising suns angle as captured in the morning mist. I knew that it had be taken to black/white before pressing the shutter button as to take out any distraction brought about with color.
2.My bride (after momentarily switching from sweet, normal JoJo into smart-ass JoJo) laughingly telling me a few days before “You know you don’t have to take the picture of every buffalo you see!” Even though she was not there, I remember saying to myself mentally, as if she was there and in full defiance…”Well I’m taking this one!!” 

For the record…I only took some 250+ buffalo shots and only edited/kept 47…including photos of the lick marks on my car. Therefore, proving that I do not have a problem with trying to “take the picture of every buffalo” as accused!
