Brincalhonas e divertidas, as Marianinhas são também conhecidas como "pequenos palhacinhos". Extremamente dóceis, para elas não existem estranhos. Todas as pessoas são normalmente bem vindas, sendo incapazes de bicar sem motivo aparente.
É também comum às Marianinhas alguns traços comportamentais semelhantes aos das aves pertencentes ao grupo das Pyrrhuras e das Jandaias, o que faz com que seus proprietários fiquem completamente conquistados por sua personalidade única e meiga.
Assim como a maioria dos demais grupos de Papagaios de pequeno e médio porte, não são excelentes faladoras,apesar de serem capazes de aprender algumas palavras, pequenas frases e assobios.
Por serem muito ativas, seu recinto ou gaiola deverá ser o maior possível, além de possuir uma grande variedade de brinquedos e atividades para não se frustrarem.
Marianinhas podem ser mantidas sozinhas, mas necessitarão de muita atenção e distração para evitar que fiquem entristecidas. Por outro lado, elas apreciam bastante a companhia de outra Marininha.
Nesse caso, por serem geniosas, tendem a se agrupar tornando-se mais independentes. Pessoas que possuem maior disponibilidade de tempo para dedicar a essa ave, mantendo um relacionamento com base na confiança e respeito mútuos, poderão na maioria das vezes, manter até mesmo um casal como excelente companhia. Uma ave sozinha tende a ser mais carente e com isso, mais dócil com seu dono.
Entretanto, por serem bastante territorialistas, a companhia de uma outra Marianinha deverá ser introduzida o mais cedo possível, pois quando adultas, necessitarão de um tempo de adaptação (não mais de um mês) sem contato físico (em gaiolas separadas) e depois de juntas, durante algum tempo, será preciso bastante atenção para evitar possíveis brigas.
Algumas vezes, será indicada uma separação temporária para mais um período de adaptação em gaiolas diferentes, para então, depois de alguns dia,s poder repetir o processo de união.
Esses "mini" papagaios de porte médio, com cauda curta e angulada, são ainda muito desconhecidos. Avistados em grupos de até 30 indivíduos sobre árvores, onde passam grande parte do seu dia se alimentando de frutos, sementes e grãos. Típicas de áreas mais secas, margeando seus cursos d'água, fazem bastante estardalhaço, passando de um ponto a outro da floresta em busca de comida.
As Marianinhas possuem combinações de cores atraentes e contrastantes, conferindo um padrão extremamente típico a seu grupo de aves.
As Marianinhas não possuem dimorfismo sexual, ou seja, não é possível distinguir machos de fêmeas com características externas. Porém, com um simples exame laboratorial do sangue (DNA) ou uma incisão para observação das gônadas (laparoscopia) é possível definir seu sexo.

The White-bellied Parrot (Pionites leucogaster), in aviculture often referred to as the White-bellied Caique, is one of the two species in the genus Pionites of the Psittacidae family; the other species being the allopatric Black-headed Parrot. Both species are popular as pets.
It is found in humid forest and nearby wooded habitats in the Amazon south of the Amazon River in Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru. It is generally fairly common throughout its range and is easily seen in a wide range of protected areas, such as the Manú National Park and Tambopata-Candamo in Peru, Cristalino State Park (near Alta Floresta), Xingu National Park and Amazônia National Park in Brazil, and Madidi National Park in Bolivia.

Description:
The White-bellied Parrot has an orange-yellow head and vent, a white belly, green wings and back, bluish primary feathers, a pinkish-horn beak, and pinkish legs and feet. Juveniles have brownish or black feathers on the head and nape, yellow feathers on the white belly, and greyish legs. Generally, the off-colored feathers will be lost and replaced by orange or white feathers respectively as the bird matures. Young birds also have dark brown irises, which will change to a rust or orange with age.
Subspecies:

Green-thighed Caique
Green-thighed Parrot/Caique (Pionites leucogaster leucogaster). Found in the eastern part of its range. It has green thighs and upper tail.
Yellow-thighed Parrot/Caique (P. l. xanthomerius). Found in western part of its range. It has yellow thighs and green upper tail.
Yellow-tailed Parrot/Caique (P. l. xanthurus). Found in the central part of its range. It has yellow thighs and upper tail.
The Yellow-thighed is the subspecies most commonly kept as a pet in the United States. The Green-thighed is somewhat rare in captivity, and Yellow-tailed is very rare in captivity.
