6960_1984_Bridgnorth_A3_800dpi

            By the spring of 1984 the pressure of a young family considerably curtailed my railway photography. Another aspect that also suffered was my record keeping of what I had actually taken, thus the exact date of this shot now eludes me.

My thanks to my old mate Dave Hayes who remembers accompanying yours truly on this day out and has been able to supply the date, 24th March 1984. 

6960 Raveningham Hall stands at the head of a rake of London Midland and Scottish Railway coaching stock waiting to depart Bridgnorth on the Severn Valley Railway.

Locomotive History
6960 is a Great Western Railway Modified Hall class mixed traffic locomotive and was built at Swindon works in 1944 and was initially un-named until named Raveningham Hall in 1947. Initially allocated Old Oak Common MPD it transferred to Reading in September 1953 and finally Oxford in September 1963. After twenty years in service it was withdrawn from Oxford MPD in June 1964 and sold to Woodham Brothers, Barry a month later for breaking up. However it left Barry for preservation in 1972, was overhauled and returned to traffic in 1975 and arrived on the Severn Valley Railway in 1977. Overhauled again in 1983 and again in 1995 it left the Severn Valley in 1996 moving to the Gloucester and Warwickshire Railway Bought by Locomotive Services it was overhauled again in 2012 and moved to the West Somerset Railway before returning to the Severn Valley Railway in 2019. 6960 is currently (January 2024) in store waiting overhaul at the One:One Collection at Margate.
