25265_1983_05_Millbrook_A3_800dpi

            Three up at Millbrook on the Bedford – Bletchley branch with 25265 leading 25313 and 25251 on a train of mainly empty container flats, 12th May 1983.

This is obviously a work visit however I cannot now remember the reason why I am trackside wandering around the infrastructure.

Locomotive History
25265 was originally D7615,  one of a batch of thirteen Class 25’s (D7611 – D7623) built at Derby in 1966 for Scottish Region duties and entered traffic in June 1966. These were the only Class 25’s delivered with a cabside recess to accommodate tablet catcher equipment. Allocated to Eastfield this batch of class 25’s spent much of their time in South West Scotland quickly sending many of Ayr’s, Hurlford’s and Dumfries MPD’s steam locomotives into store and withdrawal. D7615 came south to the London Midland Region in August 1968 being swapped with steam heating boiler fitted class 25’s and over the next nineteen years would feature regularly on the London Midland Region transfer list as it transferred between London Midland Region depots. The 15th March 1987 was the target date for final withdrawal of the class 25 fleet and 25265 was one of last class 25’s still in service on that date. By the 19th March 1987 it had been withdrawn and was dumped at Basford Hall. On the 14th July 1987 it was towed along with 25035/57 and 25109 to Vic Berry, Leicester for breaking up however it was sold for preservation and returned to use although it has been out of service since 2006.
