A destruição do grémio: uma tragédia.

Largo do Grémio, Olhão.

In the few days since I took this photograph, the majority of tiles have been removed (to be sold, apparently), and that magnificent balustrade has gone, piece by piece (the balusters also to be sold, I assume). You can see the holes in the facade where the decorative ironwork around windows has been hacked out.

I pass this building nearly every day - sometimes several times in a day - and it breaks my heart to see it go. It is true that it had fallen into a poor state, but this was a historic building in the very heart of Olhão. However, to a developer the site is worth more than the building, its heritage, and its entire history.

It will be replaced by an example of that failed capitalist model seen all over Europe - contemporary concrete-built residential apartments with empty retail units at street level.

As I wander around Olhão, I can already count dozens and dozens of unlet retail units at street level, many empty for at least three years ...
